Aidoc nets FDA clearances for AI detection of aortic tears, medium-vessel strokes

Aidoc obtained two new clearances from the FDA for its artificial intelligence programs that help analyze CT scans to spot dangerous conditions and alert providers.

The green lights include one to detect aortic dissection, where tears can occur in the walls of the body’s largest artery, and one for identifying stroke-causing blockages within the various blood vessels that feed the brain.

According to Aidoc, while other programs may be limited to scanning the larger main routes to the brain, such as the carotid and cerebral arteries, the latest clearance enables the company’s AI to examine and triage all intracranial large-vessel occlusions as well as more distant medium-sized ones—including within the lower basilar and vertebral arteries that feed the brain stem, among other vessels.

The company’s latest aorta-focused program, meanwhile, aims to notify care teams when it finds either acute tears that could result in a rupture of the vessel or more chronic dissections. That offering will be bundled with other aortic solutions, including programs for spotting thoracic or abdominal aneurysms.

Aidoc said the FDA’s latest clearances bring its total to 11; it received its ninth this past April for its deep learning tool to flag signs of acute intracranial hemorrhage. Previous green lights have covered cervical spine fractures, pulmonary embolisms and collapsed lungs.

The New York-based company also raised $110 million in venture capital funding earlier this year, with a series D round slated to help continue its expansion.
